Taking the Field: Leadership in Action

As one chapter of League leadership closes, another is already underway, reminding us that strong local government depends on engaged leaders who are committed to serving their communities and one another.

At CityVision in Raleigh, we had the privilege of swearing in the League's new board of directors. I extend my sincere congratulations to each member of the board and thank them for their willingness to lead our organization. Their service reflects the dedication that municipal officials across North Carolina demonstrate every day as they work to strengthen their hometowns.

Throughout the summer, that spirit of leadership continues at our affiliate conferences. These gatherings bring together professionals from every corner of municipal government. They provide opportunities to sharpen skills and build relationships with colleagues who understand their challenges.

While these conferences focus on professional growth, they also reinforce something much larger: the value of a united municipal voice. 

Read our short session recap featured in this issue to take a deeper look into the legislation that is most relevant to municipalities. We are in the beginning stages of compiling our Legislative Policy Committee (LPC), consisting of appointed League members at the recommendation of President McLeod.

Every legislative biennium, League staff works closely with our LPC to identify priorities, provide lawmakers with local perspectives, and advocate for policies that preserve local decision-making. Our advocacy is strengthened by the experiences and expertise of our members. When local officials gather to identify key issues impacting communities across North Carolina, the League is able to take those concerns directly to the General Assembly. Read our Q&A with Sen. Paul Lowe in this issue, and you’ll see that legislators are interested in building relationships with local government officials and recognize your expert perspectives.

As we move into the second half of the year, I encourage you to stay connected with the League, remain engaged with your affiliate organizations, and continue sharing your local perspective. Together, we can ensure that North Carolina's cities and towns have a strong voice in the decisions that shape our future.
