Event Details

From Capitol Hill to Jones Street, all the way to Main Street, it seems like everybody’s talking about housing. Some want more, some don’t want any more, and a lot of people are struggling to find a place to call home. Too often, local governments are blamed for making the housing crisis worse.

At the NC League of Municipalities, we know that cities and towns are leading the way on housing, as regulators, policy makers, and through public investments. The League’s Legislative Policy Committee, co-chaired by Council Member Stormie Forte of Raleigh and Council Member Ann Schneider of Oak Ridge, invites you to join an exciting conversation about what is happening in local communities today on housing.

Featured Speakers:
Featuring Representative Jay Adams, representing District 96 and serving on the House Standing Committee on Housing and Development, this webinar will give participants  insights into how the state legislature supports cities and towns in responding to the housing crisis.

Then, in a moderated panel discussion with City of Raleigh staff, participants will learn about Raleigh’s vision for growth while maintaining housing affordability. Featured municipal leaders include:
• Patrick Young, Raleigh Planning and Development Director and APA – NC Policy Chair
• Bynum Walters, Raleigh Planning and Development Deputy Director and APA – NC President
• Emila Sutton, Raleigh Housing and Community Development Director

Finally, Council Member Ann Schneider of Oak Ridge will offer a small-town perspective on housing.

Learning Objectives:

• Enable municipal officials to grasp fundamental principles and terminologies related to affordable housing, including definitions, funding eligibility and mechanisms.
• Explore existing policy options, best practices, and strategies that municipalities can adopt to promote affordable housing supported by real-world examples and expert insights.
• Discuss common barriers faced by municipalities in developing affordable housing and explore practical solutions and innovative approaches recommended by experts.

This webinar is ideal for:
Elected officials, planning boards, city/town managers, economic development directors, and public works staff.

Participants will receive:
