Q&A's:
TELL US WHY YOU WOULD LIKE TO SERVE IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION AT THE LEAGUE. IN PARTICULAR, SPECIFY GOALS YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH AS AN OFFICER OR BOARD MEMBER AND INDICATE HOW, IF ATTAINED, THEY WILL HELP TO ACHIEVE VISION 2030 – THE LEAGUE’S FUTURE VISION OF HOW CITIES AND TOWNS WILL OPERATE IN 2030?
I have been involved with the League now for 15 years and find there is no greater tool for municipalities than the League. This is another way to better help my Town and further educate myself of government. Broadband and Housing have been my pet peeves as i have worked hard to try to get it to all children including my granddaughter who does not have it still in our area. Covid and Helene have shown us the importance and need for having broadband in all areas across the state.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A MUNICIPAL OFFICIAL. YOU MAY WANT TO INCLUDE INFORMATION ON YOUR SERVICE ON THE MUNICIPAL GOVERNING BODY, OTHER RELATED BOARDS AND SPECIAL AREAS OF INTEREST?
I am currently in my 4th term as an elected official. I serve on the TDA Board for Blowing Rock. I serve on the Watauga County Parks n Recreation Board and have for 11 years. I have served on the High Country Council of Governments for 12 years and just finished serving as Chairman. Currently serving on the Executive Board for Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue. I serve on the Advisory Board for Watauga Hospital. I am finishing my term of being on Risk Management Board for the League. I have also served on the League's Tax and Finance and General Government committees. I'm always interested in serving as I find it gives me more knowledge on things that affect my community.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE, AND/OR COMMUNITY OR CIVIC ACTIVITIES?
I went to Blowing Rock Elementary and graduated Watauga High School. I retired from Appalachian State University with 38 years of service as a plumber. I served on the Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue as a volunteer and was the last volunteer Fire Chief for 30 years. I'm involved in many civic activities including the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum and the Blowing Rock Historical Society.
