Q&A's:
TELL US WHY YOU WOULD LIKE TO SERVE IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION AT THE LEAGUE. IN PARTICULAR, SPECIFY GOALS YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH AS AN OFFICER OR BOARD MEMBER AND INDICATE HOW, IF ATTAINED, THEY WILL HELP TO ACHIEVE VISION 2030 – THE LEAGUE’S FUTURE VISION OF HOW CITIES AND TOWNS WILL OPERATE IN 2030?
I am seeking a leadership position within the League because I believe our cities and towns are at a defining moment, one that requires collaborative, future‑focused leadership to ensure communities remain resilient, equitable, and prepared for the challenges ahead. The League’s Vision 2030 framework reflects the kind of municipal landscape I want to help build: innovative, connected, and centered on people. As an officer or board member, I would work to strengthen local government capacity by expanding access to training, peer networks, and emerging‑technology resources, particularly for smaller or rural municipalities that often face resource constraints. Building this capacity directly supports Vision 2030’s commitment to high‑performing local governments that use data and modern tools to deliver efficient, responsive services. I would also prioritize advancing community resilience by promoting long‑term planning, regional collaboration, and improved access to funding for infrastructure and preparedness initiatives. These efforts align with Vision 2030’s focus on adaptable, sustainable communities capable of navigating economic, environmental, and demographic shifts. Another key goal is to elevate civic engagement by encouraging transparent communication and inclusive participation strategies that help rebuild trust between residents and local government. Strengthening these relationships supports Vision 2030’s vision of communities where residents are informed, engaged, and active partners in shaping their future. Finally, I would work to reinforce strong state local partnerships by advocating for policies that protect local decision‑making authority and provide municipalities with the flexibility and resources they need to innovate. This approach supports Vision 2030’s emphasis on collaborative governance and ensures that cities and towns have a unified voice in statewide policy discussions. Collectively, these goals, capacity‑building, resilience, civic engagement, and advocacy, advance the League’s vision of thriving, future‑ready communities and ensure that every municipality, regardless of size or geography, has the opportunity to succeed.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A MUNICIPAL OFFICIAL. YOU MAY WANT TO INCLUDE INFORMATION ON YOUR SERVICE ON THE MUNICIPAL GOVERNING BODY, OTHER RELATED BOARDS AND SPECIAL AREAS OF INTEREST?
Over the course of my service as a municipal official, I have gained a deep understanding of the responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities that shape local government. My experience on the municipal governing body has allowed me to engage directly in policy development, budget oversight, strategic planning, and community problem‑solving. Through this work, I have developed a strong appreciation for the importance of collaboration, transparency, and long‑term thinking in building a resilient and thriving community. I have worked closely with fellow elected officials, municipal staff, and residents to address issues ranging from infrastructure needs and economic development to public safety, housing, and quality‑of‑life improvements. These responsibilities have strengthened my ability to balance immediate concerns with long‑range priorities, ensuring that decisions made today support the community’s future stability and growth.
In addition to my governing body service, I have participated in several boards, committees, and regional initiatives that have broadened my perspective on municipal operations. These roles have included work related to planning and zoning, community development, intergovernmental partnerships, and regional collaboration. Serving in these capacities has given me firsthand experience with the complexities of land‑use decisions, the importance of coordinated infrastructure planning, and the value of partnerships that extend beyond municipal boundaries. I have also been involved in efforts to strengthen communication between local government and residents, recognizing that public trust is built through consistent engagement, clear information, and opportunities for meaningful participation.
Throughout my service, I have developed particular interests in sustainable growth, financial stewardship, and community engagement. I have worked to support policies that encourage responsible development, protect community character, and ensure that infrastructure investments are aligned with long‑term needs. I have also been committed to strengthening financial planning practices, understanding that fiscal stability is essential to maintaining services, supporting economic opportunity, and preparing for future challenges. Additionally, I have prioritized efforts to improve communication with residents, believing that informed and engaged citizens are essential partners in effective local governance.
Overall, my experience as a municipal official has reinforced my commitment to public service and my belief in the importance of strong, forward‑thinking local leadership. These experiences have prepared me to contribute meaningfully in broader leadership roles and to support the work of municipalities across North Carolina as they navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead.
