Cyber Security 101: Understanding the Threat and Protecting Your Town

October 22 | 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

In today's digital world, cybersecurity is no longer optional—it's essential. For cities and towns, cyber attacks pose a growing and urgent threat, targeting everything from sensitive data and public funds to critical infrastructure and service delivery systems. And with municipalities increasingly reliant on digital tools, the risks are only rising.

Cyber Security 101 is a one-hour online training designed specifically for local government officials and staff. Whether you're an elected official, manager, IT professional, department head, or someone who simply wants to understand the basics, this session will provide you with a clear and practical foundation in municipal cyber defense.

Participants will gain a solid understanding of:

  • The most common types of cyber attacks currently targeting local governments (e.g., phishing, ransomware, business email compromise)

  • Real-world examples of how breaches occur—and what the consequences can be

  • Red flags to watch for and warning signs of potential vulnerabilities

  • Simple, immediate best practices to strengthen your cybersecurity posture

  • How to cultivate a “cyber aware” culture across all departments and teams

Instructor:  Erik Wells, Cyber Security Advisor, NCLM

  • Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.

  • Participants will receive one hour of AML credit.
