Municipal Supervisory Basics 101

Morning Session | 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

 

Course Description: As employees excel in their field and ultimately get promoted into supervisory positions, their role changes. These new supervisors are now no longer just experts in their field. They are managers, faced with new set of challenges requiring a new set of skills. This transition is often overlooked or ignored, despite the importance of the role. To manage well is among the most critical goals within any workplace, as it has an impact on employee morale, productivity, creativity and overall teamwork. With that in mind, what makes a great municipal manager?

 

What to Expect:
In this course, participants will explore:
• Basic skills and knowledge for effective supervision.
• Identify best practice in leading, communicating, and delegating work to you team.
• Discuss key elements of conflict resolution and problem solving.
• Identify common problem areas that impact or enhance effective teams.

Afternoon Session | 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

• Differentiate the role of a manager from that of a technical expert, recognizing the mindset shift required when transitioning into a supervisory position.
• Build and sustain positive team dynamics that promote collaboration, accountability, and effective engagement.
• Apply basic coaching and developmental techniques to support employee growth and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
• Assess their own leadership style and identify strengths and areas for development to enhance their effectiveness as municipal managers.
