Tell us why you would like to serve in a leadership position at the League. In particular, specify goals you would like to accomplish as an officer or board member and indicate how, if attained, they will help to achieve Vision 2030 – the League’s future vision of how cities and towns will operate in 2030?
Mayor Mitch Colvin, a lifelong resident and current mayor of Fayetteville, North Carolina, has demonstrated a deep commitment to enhancing the quality of life for his community. His leadership experience and dedication position him well to contribute significantly to the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) in achieving its Vision 2030.
Develop a Viable Workforce: By focusing on workforce development, Mayor Colvin continues to work with local organizations, education institutions, and economic development organizations to focus on Next Generation Workforce. This will create a pathway from high school, higher education, and beyond to create technology jobs that will ensure minimum wage service jobs are not the only option for residents.
Fostering Collaborative Partnerships: Mayor Colvin is committed to building productive partnerships with Cumberland County and other local municipalities. Such collaborations are essential for economic success and reflect Vision 2030's goal of municipalities working together for the betterment of their communities.
Tell us about your experience as a municipal official. You may want to include information on your service on the municipal governing body, other related boards and special areas of interest?
Mayor Mitch Colvin, a native of Fayetteville, has a passion for helping to improve the City and its citizens. He was elected in November 2017 as the City’s longest serving African-American mayor and is currently serving his third term. Prior to that, he served two consecutive terms as a city council member for District 3 from 2013-15 and as mayor pro tem from 2015-17. Mayor Colvin’s vision is to help Fayetteville prepare for the future by building a viable work force, investing in infrastructure and expanding our city's connection to the global economy. He is placing a strong emphasis on economic development; education and training; and the creation of a safe and secure community. Mayor Colvin strongly believes in building a community that works for all segments of our society and our city.
Tell us about your educational background, professional experience, and/or community or civic activities?
In 1995, at the age of 21, Mr. Colvin assumed the operational leadership of Colvin Funeral Home, Inc. He still leads the operation of Colvin Funeral Home and Crematory today, helping residents in their time of need. Mr. Colvin learned at an early age that being in business is not easy and over the last 20 years he has worked hard to build a strong, community-oriented business, restore goodwill and address remaining legacy issues. Today his company is a market leader in funeral home service calls. He believes that hard work and commitment in the face of adversity is crucial to survival in business and in life.
Mayor Colvin has been a vocal advocate working, with District Attorney Billy West and Clerk of Court Lisa Scales to help expunge the record of non-violent felons in our community. Additionally, Mayor Colvin places a priority on mental health awareness and initiatives for residents in need.
