THE CITY OF ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA HAS EXTENDED ITS SEARCH FOR A HIGHLY RESPECTED AND ACCOMPLISHED LAWYER TO BE ITS CITY ATTORNEY. AS THE REGIONAL AND CULTURAL HUB FOR WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA, ASHEVILLE IS THE TENTH LARGEST CITY IN THE STATE WITH A POPULATION OF 91,929 AND AN ESTIMATED DAILY POPULATION OF OVER 150,000. THE CITY OF ASHEVILLE OPERATES THE COUNCIL-MANAGER FORM OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT WITH AN ANNUAL BUDGET OF $180 MILLION AND A STAFF OF 1,248 EMPLOYEES. THE CITY ATTORNEY IS APPOINTED BY AND REPORTS TO A SEVEN-MEMBER CITY COUNCIL. THE POSITION PROVIDES LEGAL SERVICES TO THE CITY COUNCIL, CITY MANAGER, AND CITY DEPARTMENTS WITH A LEGAL TEAM CONSISTING OF A DEPUTY CITY ATTORNEY, THREE ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEYS, A LITIGATION PARALEGAL AND A LEGAL ASSISTANT AND AN OPERATING BUDGET OF NEARLY $1.1 MILLION. THE CITY ATTORNEY ALSO MANAGES LEGAL SERVICES PROVIDED UNDER CONTRACT BY OUTSIDE COUNSEL. THE POSITION REQUIRES A JURIS DOCTOR DEGREE FROM A SCHOOL OF LAW ACCREDITED BY THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION AND EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE PRACTICING CORPORATE, CIVIL OR MUNICIPAL LAW FOR AT LEAST SEVEN YEARS AND ADVISING CLIENTS ON COMPLEX AND HIGHLY VISIBLE MATTERS INVOLVING CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, LAND USE AND DEVELOPMENT, AND EMPLOYMENT. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF NORTH CAROLINA AND FEDERAL LAWS AFFECTING MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT AND BE LICENSED TO PRACTICE LAW IN NORTH CAROLINA OR HAVE AN ACTIVE APPLICATION IN PROCESS AT THE TIME OF APPLYING FOR THIS POSITION. CONTINUOUS LICENSURE IS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT. GENERAL COUNSEL AND/OR LITIGATION EXPERIENCE PREFERRED. EXPERIENCE MANAGING A LEGAL STAFF IS DESIRED.
