THE EMERALD ISLE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE POSITION OF ASSISTANT CHIEF OF POLICE. THIS IS A COMMAND LEVEL APPOINTMENT THAT REQUIRES AN EXPERIENCED LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONAL WITH EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION SKILLS, STRONG LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT ABILITIES AND EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE WITH COMMUNITY POLICING CONCEPTS. INITIATIVE, INTEGRITY AND SOUND INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT ARE REQUIRED. CANDIDATES MUST BE ABLE TO PERFORM HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE WORK AS THE PRINCIPAL STAFF ASSISTANT TO THE CHIEF OF POLICE. GENERAL DUTIES WILL INCLUDE ASSISTING THE POLICE CHIEF IN OVERSEEING THE DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT, DIRECTING, ORGANIZING, AND COORDINATING THE ACTIVITIES AND VARIOUS UNITS OF THE DEPARTMENT, SUPERVISING PROFESSIONAL, TECHNICAL, AND CLERICAL EMPLOYEES IN A VARIETY OF PROJECTS, AS WELL AS, ACTING IN PLACE OF THE CHIEF OF POLICE IN HIS/HER ABSENCE. QUALIFIED CANDIDATES MUST POSSESS EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES IN THE AREAS OF ORGANIZATION, CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING, COMMUNITY OUTREACH, CRIMINAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE LAWS AND PROCEDURES, PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT, EMPLOYMENT LAW, BUDGETING, AND OTHER ASPECTS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION AND POLICE OPERATIONS. ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF MICROSOFT COMPUTER SYSTEMS AND PROGRAMS IS A MUST. PREFERRED CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS A BACHELOR’S DEGREE FROM AN ACCREDITED COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY WITH MAJOR COURSE WORK IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE, POLICE SCIENCE, PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, OR OTHER RELEVANT FIELD. ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES MUST POSSESS AN ADVANCED LAW ENFORCEMENT CERTIFICATE FROM THE NORTH CAROLINA CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION AND TRAINING STANDARDS COMMISSION; SUPPLEMENTED BY ADVANCED TRAINING IN POLICE ADMINISTRATION, LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT COURSE WORK AND AT LEAST TEN YEARS SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, WITH AT LEAST THREE YEARS AT THE RANK OF LIEUTENANT OR HIGHER; OR ANY EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. THIS IS AN EXEMPT POSITION WITH A SALARY RANGE OF: $50,385 - $74,570. STARTING SALARY WILL BE BASED ON QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE.
