PERFORMS DIFFICULT TECHNICAL WORK SUPERVISING THE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF A WATER TREATMENT PLANT. DOES RELATED WORK AS REQUIRED. WORK IS PERFORMED UNDER THE GENERAL SUPERVISION OF THE UTILITY TREATMENT SUPERINTENDENT. SUPERVISION IS EXERCISED OVER OTHER OPERATORS. ESSENTIAL FUCTIONS/TYPICAL TASK: • OVERSEEING, SUPERVISING AND PARTICIPATING IN THE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE WATER TREATMENT PLANT; PREPARING AND MAINTAINING APPROPRIATE RECORDS AND FILES. • PLANS, SCHEDULES, SUPERVISES AND PARTICIPATES IN THE WORK OF PLANT OPERATORS; • MAINTAINS CHEMICAL AND MATERIAL INVENTORY AND PLACES ORDERS AS NECESSARY; • OVERSEES REGULAR TESTING AND LOGGING OF SAME; • INSPECTS THE OPERATION OF THE WATER PLANT TO ENSURE CONFORMANCE TO STANDARDS AND PROPER OPERATION; • APPROVES ADJUSTMENTS IN TREATMENT; • DIRECTS THE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF PLANT EQUIPMENT; • SUPERVISES THE INSTALLATION OF NEW PLANT EQUIPMENT; • ENFORCES PLANT SAFETY REGULATIONS; • ASSISTS WITH PLANT PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATION AND TRAINING; • TROUBLESHOOTS EQUIPMENT FAILURES; • MAINTAINS DAILY RECORDS AND REPORTS ON CHEMICAL USED, PLANT PUMPING AND OTHER PURIFICATION ACTIVITIES; • HANDLES CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS REGARDING WATER QUALITY; • PERFORMS RELATED TASKS AS REQUIRED. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRINCIPLES, PRACTICES AND EQUIPMENT OF WATER PLANT OPERATIONS; THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF CHLORINATION REQUIREMENTS OF WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS; SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF PUBLIC UTILITIES ADMINISTRATION; ABILITY TO PLAN AND SUPERVISE OPERATIONS; THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS INVOLVED IN WATER PLANT OPERATIONS; GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF ROUTINE LABORATORY PROCEDURES; ABILITY TO ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH CO WORKERS, SUBORDINATES AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC; ABILITY TO PREPARE DETAILED REPORTS AND MAINTAIN RECORDS. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: GRADUATION FROM HIGH SCHOOL OR GED EQUIVALENT, SUPPLEMENTED BY COLLEGE LEVEL COURSES IN CHEMISTRY OR WATER PLANT OPERATIONS AND EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN WATER PLANT OPERATIONS, INCLUDING SOME SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: POSSESSION OF A CLASS A WATER TREATMENT OPERATOR'S CERTIFICATION ISSUED BY THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA.
