THE CITY OF DANVILLE, OPERATING UNDER A COUNCIL-MANAGER FORM OF GOVERNMENT, SEEKS AN OUTSTANDING LEADER TO BE THEIR NEXT FIRE CHIEF. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL LEAD AN INTERNATIONALLY ACCREDITED DEPARTMENT, ONE OF ONLY SIX IN VIRGINIA TO ACHIEVE THIS STATUS. ADDITIONALLY, IN 2019, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT PROUDLY ACHIEVED THE STRATEGIC GOAL OF IMPROVING THEIR ISO RATING FROM 2 TO AN ISO RATING OF 1 FOR RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES. REPORTING TO THE CITY MANAGER, THE FIRE CHIEF WILL LEAD THE 125-YEAR-OLD DANVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT WHICH CONSISTS OF 145 FTE STAFF. THE CHIEF SERVES AS THE FIRE OFFICIAL AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COORDINATOR, PROVIDING DIRECTION TO FIRE SUPPRESSION, RESCUE, EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RESPONSE, EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE, THE FIRE TRAINING CENTER, AND THE 911 EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION CENTER. THE CHIEF WILL OVERSEE A $8.9M BUDGET, SEVEN FIRE STATIONS, THE NEWEST, A STATE-OF-THE-ART HEADQUARTERS BUILDING THAT OPENED IN 2014, AND THE DANVILLE/ PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY REGIONAL TRAINING CENTER. HANDLING 8403 INCIDENTS IN 2018 AND ON TRACK FOR A SIMILAR NUMBER IN 2019, OVER 5300 WERE EMS CALLS, AN INCREASE OF NEARLY 25% IN SEVEN YEARS. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAS SEVEN ENGINE COMPANIES, ONE AERIAL, ONE COMMAND VEHICLE, ONE SAFETY TRUCK, AND A BATTALION CHIEF ON 24-HOUR, 3/4 SCHEDULE. QUALIFICATIONS AND PAY: A MINIMUM OF 10 YEARS PROGRESSIVE FIRE SAFETY EXPERIENCE; MUST HAVE 5 YEARS OF CROSS-FUNCTIONAL AND PROGRESSIVELY RESPONSIBLE EXPERIENCE INCLUDING FIRE SUPPRESSION, PREVENTION, EMS AND ADMINISTRATIVE WORK AT THE RANK OF BATTALION CHIEF, ASSISTANT CHIEF OR HIGHER; AND A BA/BS DEGREE (MASTER’S DEGREE HIGHLY PREFERRED), OR SOME COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS. NFA CERTIFICATION IS ALSO PREFERRED. RESIDENCY WITHIN CITY LIMITS IS REQUIRED WITHIN A NEGOTIATED TIMEFRAME. THE HIRING RANGE IS $115,000 -$149,476 ANNUALLY.
