DUE TO RETIREMENT, THE TOWN OF WAYNESVILLE IN HAYWOOD COUNTY, NC IS SEEKING A CHIEF OF POLICE TO LEAD A SERVICE-FOCUSED, DYNAMIC AND PROACTIVE POLICE DEPARTMENT. THE POLICE CHIEF WILL BE A TRANSFORMATIVE AND VISIONARY LEADER WITH A FOCUS ON COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AS WELL AS MAINTAINING AND INCREASING TRUST AND PARTNERSHIPS. THE CHIEF OF POLICE IS THE PUBLIC FACE OF THE WAYNESVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT, JOINING A COMMAND STAFF OF “WORKING SUPERVISORS,” WHO MUST BE ABLE TO FOSTER EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE COMMUNITY, ELECTED OFFICIALS, TOWN ADMINISTRATION, COMMAND STAFF, SUPERVISORS, OFFICERS AND CIVILIAN MEMBERS OF THE DEPARTMENT. POSSESSING OUTSTANDING COMMUNICATION, ADVOCACY AND STRATEGIC THINKING SKILLS, THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE A CREATIVE AND PROACTIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONAL WITH A PROVEN TRACK RECORD IN EFFECTIVE CHANGE MANAGEMENT AND INNOVATIVE STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP. WAYNESVILLE IS A COMMUNITY THAT VALUES DIVERSITY AND DEMANDS AN EXCEPTIONAL LEADER TO BE ITS NEXT POLICE CHIEF. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT AND POSITION: COMPETITIVE CANDIDATES WILL HAVE A DEMONSTRATED COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY ORIENTED POLICING (COP), A TRACK RECORD OF LEADING BY EXAMPLE AND “WALKING THE TALK” OF EMBRACING A PROACTIVE POLICING PHILOSOPHY THROUGHOUT THE DEPARTMENT AND IN EVERY POSITION, SETTING HIGH STANDARDS OF ACCOUNTABILITY FOR BALANCING LAW ENFORCEMENT STRATEGIES WITH COLLABORATIVE ENGAGEMENT, AND ESTABLISHING AND NEGOTIATING INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS TO SOLVE COMMUNITY PROBLEMS. QUALIFICATIONS: THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WOULD HAVE A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE, PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, OR OTHER RELEVANT FIELD, AND 10 YEARS OF PROGRESSIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPERIENCE ACROSS FUNCTIONAL AREAS SUCH AS PATROL, INTERNAL AFFAIRS, ADMINISTRATION, INVESTIGATIONS, ETC. TO INCLUDE FIVE (5) YEARS OF MANAGEMENT-LEVEL EXPERIENCE AT THE RANK OF CAPTAIN OR HIGHER; OR ANY EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE THAT PROVIDES THE REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES OF A LAW ENFORCEMENT EXECUTIVE. INDIVIDUALS MUST HAVE CURRENT CERTIFICATION AS A LOCAL OR STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER OR EQUIVALENT MILITARY LAW ENFORCEMENT MOS CERTIFICATION. RETIRED INDIVIDUALS MUST HAVE NO LONGER THAN A THREE (3) YEAR BREAK IN FULL-TIME LAW ENFORCEMENT SERVICE AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT. NORTH CAROLINA DOES NOT HAVE RECIPROCITY WITH FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT CERTIFICATIONS. SALARY RANGE AND APPLICATION PROCESS: THE FULL SALARY RANGE IS $ 67,364.55 TO $105,661.52 WITH AN ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE OF $ 85,000 TO $90,000 (BEGINNING SALARY WILL BE COMMENSURATE WITH QUALIFICATIONS).
