Description

The County of Surry is accepting applications for a Development Services Director. This position will plan, direct, organize and review the activities of the Development Services Department including planning, inspections, central permitting, water and sewer enterprises, and other infrastructure projects. The employee will supervise and manage the activities of the department, including the major functions of Planning, Zoning, Inspections, Plan Review, Water and Sewer, Central Permitting, and Watershed.  The position ensures a high level of efficient customer service is provided and will be primarily responsible for the supervision, coaching, development, training, and evaluation of all divisions. Other responsibilities will include: developing, planning, and implementing departmental goals and objectives, recommending and administering policies and procedures; evaluating efficiency and effectiveness of departmental operations; and ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, and policies. Performs other duties as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the County Manager. Education and Experience: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree and experience in planning, business administration, inspections, environmental health or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants should have the ability to communicate effectively, written and orally; the ability to deal tactfully with the public; and have good organizational, administrative, and personnel management skills. Knowledge in development services concepts and public water and sewer infrastructures is desired. Also desired is a comprehensive knowledge of applicable codes, regulations and standards governing building inspections, planning, environmental matters, zoning and land use. Salary: Grade 78 $56,052 - $95,532.
