The City of Washington, North Carolina is seeking a forward-thinking Police Captain (Police Commander). The candidate should have a proven track record in law enforcement current best practices and the community’s expectations of law enforcement professionals. Perform law enforcement and administrative work the overall management of a division within the department. Assist in overall departmental planning and operations; assist in developing policies and procedures; assist in preparation of annual budget; supervise staff directly or through others; and preforms related tasks as required. A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, political science, public administration, business administration, or related field (minimum seven (7) years’ management experience in law enforcement) at the rank of Sergeant or higher); an Associate Degree or currently enrolled(minimum ten plus (10+) years’ management experience in law experience)at the rank of Sergeant or higher; or any equivalent combination of experience and training necessary to perform the work. Training certification in leadership and supervision, knowledge of modern policing best practices, exceptional communication skills to plan, organize, direct and supervise assigned division within the department; must possess an Advance Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or a graduate from an executive management school based on position within current department; must have current certification as a municipal/local or state government law enforcement officer by his/her respective state or with no more than one year break in full-time sworn service at time of appointment. Please note: North Carolina law does not have recognize nor have a reciprocal relationship with federal law enforcement certification; ability to obtain BLET Certification in North Carolina within twelve (12) months of hire date. Candidate must have ability to possess and maintain a valid NC driver’s license; must meet and maintain all requirements for the position as established by the city and the state of North Carolina. The selection process for applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will consist of structured interview/evaluation process (date to be determined) and an interview with the Chief of Police. Salary: $52,343/25.16/hr. - $78,515/37.75/hr.
