Commerce Fellows Training Package

The NC Department of Commerce has recently announced the availability of Commerce Fellows / Building Community through Capacity and Knowledge grant funds, created with de-obligated Community Development Block Grant funds, to support professional development for local government professionals. The UNC School of Government is one of two universities partnering on this project and grants are available to send eight city and county staff members from your county to School of Government courses with lodging included. The application deadline to participate has been extended to June 15, 2016. Click here for more information.

Don’t delay. Registration is still open for Town Hall Day, which is the League's premier opportunity for members to visit legislators and make their views known. The day’s events represent a prime opportunity to show strength in numbers and draw attention to the many serious legislative issues facing cities and towns. Dental Discount Card Available

The NC Drug Card program made available to League members for use by their residents has announced the availability of a free dental discount card through Aetna. The Drug Card program was launched in 2009 and the goal of the latest discount is to inform North Carolina residents that a program exists that can help them with their medication costs. All cards are pre-activated and can be used immediately. Download yours here.

Webinar: The New (and Final) FLSA Overtime Regulations

The US Department of Labor has just released the final rule setting the salary level below which all employees must be paid overtime. As a result, employers will have to pay time-and-one-half overtime premium pay to many, many employees who now earn a straight salary. How will your organization deal with the major change? This 1.5 hour webinar on Monday, June 6, 2016 by the UNC School of Government will examine the new rules and how government employers can implement the change while inflicting the least amount of harm to their budgets. Supervisory Management Program

Supervisors in local government today face unique and complex challenges when working with others and serving their communities. This UNC School of Government program provides newly promoted and veteran local government supervisors and front-line managers with the opportunity to better understand and practice basic supervision skills. This one-day workshop offered by the UNC School of Government on June 28, 2016, covers promising strategies and tools for promoting economic development in the face of tight budgets and tough economic conditions. Performance Measurement 101

Do you really know how well your department is performing? This workshop is designed for city and county managers, department heads, and other local government officials, focuses on the fundamentals of performance measurement and the design of measures that strengthen local government performance. This course is offered as two half days, Tuesday, July 12, 1:00-5:00 pm and concludes Wednesday, July 13, 9:00 am to noon. The Performance Measurement Workshop will be offered August 25 at the School of Government from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Click here to learn more.

Save the Date: Local Government Managers Innovation Lab

The Local Government Managers Innovation Lab is one of a new group of programs designed specifically for city and county managers. This one-day event held on November 18, 2016 in Chapel Hill will provide hands-on training to improve organizational effectiveness. Participants will learn to use design thinking as a practical tool to develop innovative solutions to community issues and to improve service delivery. Registration opens May 15th. In the News: Charlotte Earns Nation’s First Stormwater Program Aaa Bond Rating

Moody's has upgraded the City of Charlotte Stormwater Enterprise's rating to Aaa from Aa1 associated with the city's $155.7 million of outstanding stormwater revenue debt. According to Moody’s, “The highest quality rating reflects the prioritization of stormwater debt service, robust financial performance of the system, a strong service area, prudent governance and a manageable level of debt.”  Charlotte’s program is the first stormwater utility in the country with the Aaa rating.
