Up Front, a message from the President

March 16, 2016

Yesterday, North Carolinians spoke pretty loud and pretty clear about the $2 billion state bond package that will lead to needed infrastructure investments across our state. With more than 2 million people voting, 65 percent supported the bonds. The passage of the referendum helps to achieve a League advocacy goal calling for a bond to aid local governments in making these types of investments, as $309 million will go to local water and sewer improvements.

That being the case, it should have come as no surprise that the League’s Executive Committee passed a resolution in support of the Connect NC bond, and that League staff has been taking steps since then to promote the plan.

I suppose now that the referendum has passed, a lot of the focus will shift to the actual projects – the water and sewer, the university and community college buildings, the improvements at the parks that we love and that bring visitors to our state and our local communities. I think it is equally important to focus on the message from voters. When North Carolinians can see and understand the tangible results of taxpayer-funded, government investment, they support that investment. It is no different when it comes to the local investments that cities and towns make every day – in streets, sidewalks, local parks, and building projects. These investments enhance businesses, help create jobs, and improve the quality of life of residents.

The message from voters yesterday was clear: Let’s keep investing in our future and in our children’s future.
