Municipal Insurance Trust of North Carolina (MIT of NC)
Covering more than 9,000 local government employees in approximately 403 entities across the state, the Municipal Insurance Trust (MIT) is the largest of the League's pools. Coverages include medical, dental, vision, short term disability, long term gap disability and life insurance, all provided through insurance industry relationships.
How MIT began
The League created The Municipal Insurance Trust (MIT) in 1983. The MIT was formed after several years of sponsoring a fully insured, commercial program. The membership determined that the most prudent, long term direction should be to form a self-funded pool.
Coverages
Medical - Four different benefit designs, each including a comprehensive pharmacy benefit
Dental - Three different plan options
Vision
Life - Group employee life, dependent coverage, and supplemental employee coverages
are offered
Disability - Short term and long term disability available
Organization
NCLM RMS staff provides eligibility services, finance and customer service. Third party admin-istrators under contract with RMS provide underwriting, claims and customer services. The NCLM Executive Director appoints the RMS director. The NCLM Board of Directors appoints the 14 members of the RMS Board of Trustees. The Trustees retain professional consultants in the fields of investment management, actuarial study and financial audit. Loss reserves are reviewed regularly, and the pool is conservatively reinsured for catastrophic claims.
