Attention: Attendees of the NCCCMA Winter Conference

Some of the folks attending the Managers' Conference last week had to leave early because of the predicted bad weather in the western part of the state and had to miss Friday's legislative update.

The legislative update will be repeated in a conference call to be scheduled in the near future. We will contact you with a date and time shortly.

Ethics Webinar Update

The cost for the webinar scheduled for March 25, presented by the UNC School of Government, has changed.

The new cost is $95 per site. We apologize for any confusion.

Go to www.sog.unc.edu/programs/ethics for more information.

NCLM Executive Director S. Ellis Hankins was a guest on For Your Information, a program on WPTF, a Raleigh-based radio station. The program aired Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010. To listen to his comments go to

Time to learn the municipal ropes

The Essentials of Municipal Government is designed to help elected officials understand the basics of municipal government and identify strategies to address the challenges in governing North Carolina's municipalities. The course will be offered in six locations across the state.  Also offered is a Regional LeaderShop, Local Finance: Making Sense of Annual Financial Statements.. In addition, the League and the School of Government have begun offering the ethics training class required for local elected officials by legislation enacted by the 2009 General Assembly.  Also, click here for a Model Orientation package for newly elected officials.

Interested in donating toward Haiti earthquake relief? Go to the National League of Cities' website for suggested links and ways to donate. Responding to the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti and its resulting devastation will take an international effort. NLC is requesting communities to encourage their citizens to support the relief efforts.

You may also go to Gov. Beverly Perdue's website for ways to help.

Brevard Council Member Rodney Locks, NCLM president (right), and Cleveland County Commissioner Mary Accor, president of the N.C. Association of County Commissioners (left), pose with Gov. Beverly Perdue following the Governor's visit with the Governor's Local Government Advisory Council in Raleigh on Jan. 20, 2010.

A number of topics were discussed during the meeting including transportation, jobs and schools. The advisory group is made up of municipal and county leaders from across North Carolina.

With a recent enacted law requiring that all municipal elected officials receive two hours of ethics training, the League has joined with the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government and the N.C. Association of County Commissioners to offer training sessions across the state as well as a web-based seminar.
It's not too late to plan to attend a 2010 NCLM Regional Legislative Meeting. The schedule has been set and the League will be coming to you in April for a legislative update just before the 2010 session of the General Assembly begins. Twelve meetings will be held for convenience with all meetings in the late afternoon (4 p.m.). No registration fee will be charged.
