The focus of the League's environmental programs is:
to ensure that municipal concerns are addressed in the state and federal environmental regulatory process; and
to monitor the state and federal environmental rule-making process; and
to inform NC municipal officials about environmental issues and opportunities to become involved in the development of environmental policies.
Cities and towns are on the front line of environmental protection, providing a variety of environmental services to citizens and playing a critical role in protecting our valuable natural resources.
Municipal officials are committed to being stewards of the environment and have made environmental protection a major focus of the League's activities.
League policies on environmental issues are studied and recommended by a standing League policy committee, the Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee (EENR) , comprised of at least 21 elected and appointed municipal officials from across the state and representing all sizes of municipalities. (See also policy development process under "About NCLM" ). The recommendations of this committee are, in turn studied by the League's Board of Directors, and recommended to the full membership of the League. The NCLM member cities and towns, meeting annually, adopt legislative goals and policies that guide the work of the organization on environmental and other issues.
A Regulatory Advisory Committee , comprised of municipal staff, meet regularly to advise the EENR Committee and the League on technical issues.
Below are broad environmental categories that the League follows for cities and towns and links to further information about specific issues within that category.
