Federal Advocacy
The federal government establishes many of the regulations and policies that govern municipal operations, especially in the areas of drinking water safety, wastewater treatment, air quality, landfill rules, roads, housing programs, human services, personnel and employment procedures, and other areas. The League works to ensure that federal rules and regulations are feasible and that adequate federal resources are allocated to carry out the required responsibilities. The League also works to ensure that critical municipal needs are part of the national domestic agenda.
To do so, the League works in close cooperation with the National League of Cities. The League and the NLC lobby members of Congress on issues including transportation, telecommunications, housing and community development, and tax equity and fairness.
NCLM League staff members provide information to N.C. municipal officials to assist them in their advocacy work with the state's congressional delegation. The organizes breakfast meetings with congressional representatives, briefings and meetings with members during the NLC Congres-sional City Conference and other activities designed to address the national municipal agenda.
The League also coordinates its federal advocacy activities, whenever possible, with the Washington office of the North Carolina Governor.
