State Boards and Commissions 

Hundreds of state-level boards and commissions exist in North Carolina. Many elected municipal officials and staff serve on these bodies. Depending on the authority establishing the board or commission, members may make policy or regulatory decisions, or policy recommendations, on issues of statewide importance.

Involvement in a state board or commission offers a tangible way to ensure that state decision-making considers the municipal perspective. League members and staff seek to have municipal officials appointed to state committees, commissions and boards. To do so, League members and staff work with the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Senate President Pro Tem and House Speaker, where most of these appointments are made.
